College Park Sees Gains and Losses in Local Retail

In the last year, the city has seen an almost equal number of retail businesses opening and closing.

It's tough to keep track of businesses in College Park. For every retail establishment that boards up its windows, another seems to be celebrating its grand opening.

Well, wonder no more. At Wednesday evening's City Council work session, College Park's Economic Development Coordinator Christopher Warren presented the Annual Economic Development Report.

Included in the report was a list of all the College Park businesses that have opened and closed within the last year. Some, like Fat Tino's, have simply changed location, but others, like Pita Pit and Varsity Grille, are gone from College Park for good.

In total, 19 new retail establishments opened, and 17 closed. The map below indicates the locations of the new businesses in green, and the closed businesses in red(ish). As is clear in the map, downtown gains and losses are roughly equal, but business is disappearing in midtown and bustling in uptown and Hollywood.
