In celebration of Memorial Day, a Certificate of Recognition from Howard County Government was presented to Residences of Vantage Point resident Judy Dye in honor of her “dedication to the welfare of our military service members.” The presentation was made by Stephanie Wall, Outreach Coordinator for Howard County Executive Calvin Ball.

For the past decade, Dye has worked alongside fellow Vantage Point resident Vivian C. “Millie” Bailey who led efforts sending hundreds of care packages overseas to deployed troops. In January the duo also sent packages to Maryland National Guard troops providing security in Washington, D.C., after the attack on the Capitol.

“These small acts of kindness make such a difference to those who are sacrificing for our safety,” the Certificate of Recognition for Dye noted.

Over the years, Bailey and Dye gathered items from their own stockpile and donations of snack bars, bags of trail mix, nuts and cookies from other Vantage Point residents and mailed them to military troops. They are currently in the process of gathering supplies for Maryland and Virginia National Guards nearing deployment. The women have been assisted by American Legion Post 156 and members of the Howard County Commission for Veterans and Military Families among others.

Bailey served in World War II and was recognized for a lifetime of community service in 2020 at the opening of Vivian C. ‘Millie’ Bailey Park at Lake Kittamaqundi in Downtown Columbia. The park, developed by The Howard Hughes Corporation, is the future site of the Howard County Veterans Monument.
