Flood Warning Extended In Howard County

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — The National Weather Service has extended its flood warning for several areas in central Maryland, including Howard County. The warning was set to expire at 6:30 a.m. but has been extended until 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16.

After 6 a.m., weather officials said that gauges indicated minor flooding was occurring across low-lying areas in Elkridge, Glencoe and Savage.

Drivers who encounter waters of unknown depth on the roads should turn around; don't drown. In particular, people should be careful at night when it is harder to recognize flooding.

These areas are under the flood warning until 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16:

• Anne Arundel County
• Baltimore County
• Howard County

During a flood warning, flooding is imminent or occurring. Drivers should turn around if they come across flooded roads, and pedestrians should not attempt to walk through flood waters.

PREVIOUS WARNING: The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for several areas in central Maryland, including Howard County. The warning applies to Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll and Howard counties as well as Baltimore City.

Columbia, Ellicott City, Elkridge, Jessup and Savage may experience flooding, according to the warning.

During a flood warning, flooding is imminent or occurring. Drivers should turn around if they come across flooded roads, and pedestrians should not attempt to walk through flood waters.

The flood warning is in effect from 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, until 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16.

Weather officials said that 1 to 2 inches of rain had already fallen by 9:27 p.m. on Saturday, and more than 1 inch of additional rainfall could occur overnight. The Little Patuxent River at Savage is rising above flood stage, according to the flood warning, which said low-lying areas may become inundated and flood waters could approach Brock Bridge Road in Jessup.

The flood warning applies to these areas:

• Anne Arundel County (northwestern)
• Baltimore City
• Baltimore County (western)
• Carroll County (northwestern)
• Howard County

These cities may experience flooding, according to the warning: Baltimore, Columbia, Severn, Pikesville, Cockeysville, Elkridge, Baltimore-Washington Airport, Glen Burnie, Ellicott City, Towson, Catonsville, Woodlawn, Odenton, Randallstown, Parkville, Owings Mills, Eldersburg, Carney, Milford Mill and Reisterstown.
