COLUMBIA, MD — Parents can have their little ghosts' and goblins' candy scanned by a medical X-ray machine as a community service offered by Patient First in Columbia. Patient First also will provide free safety blinkers at each of its medical centers during October that can be attached to a Halloween costume and can help increase visibility while trick-or-treating.

While an adult should always inspect Halloween candy first, Patient First will offer the free digital X-ray imaging of Halloween candy as a special service. It's also a treat for the kids as they get to peek inside their candy. Such imaging also can provide parents with piece of mind knowing that their kids' candy doesn't contain harmful objects like glass, metal or plastic. Bags of candy may be brought into any Patient First Neighborhood Medical Center from Oct. 26 through Nov. 3.

Patient First is located at 5900 Cedar Ln., Columbia.

Patient First also offers a few helpful hints to parents to help their kids enjoy a safe trick-or-treating experience.
1. Know the route that your children will take if you do not go with them.
2. Younger children should go with adults. There should be at least one adult for every four children.
3. If possible, give your children a cell phone and check in with them during the evening.
4. Set a time for everyone to be home.
5. Nobody eats their treats until checked by an adult.
6. Wear bright clothing or reflective gear.
