Man Accused of Killing Twin Brother Being Evaluated by Psychiatrist

A Georgia man accused of killing his twin brother in Columbia in 2007 might not be competent to stand trial and is currently being evaluated by a psychiatrist, according to a motion his defense attorney filed Tuesday.

Wael Ali, 23, He is facing first-degree murder charges.

On Aug. 27, 2007, the body of Wasel, Wael's twin, was discovered on a secluded dirt path in the woods behind the 12000 block of Green Meadow Drive in Columbia.

An autopsy showed he died as a result of a neck injury.

Howard County police arrested Wael Ali in September of 2011 in Marietta, GA.

According to Wael Ali’s defense attorney, Jason Shapiro, a psychiatrist evaluated Ali for four-and-a-half hours Monday, after which the doctor said Ali may not be competent to stand trial. He said he wanted to further examine Ali before he makes a final determination.

A motions hearing scheduled for Wednesday in the case was postponed as a result of the possibility of incompetency. Ali's hearing was rescheduled for March 12.

Charging documents in the case have revealed that the .

Friends told officials arguments between the two would result in physical violence, including choking, according to police. The fights allegedly stemmed from conflicts over multiple run-ins with the law.

The charges indicate that the brothers enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2007 and went absent without leave after boot camp, stealing a U.S. government vehicle, which they then used to impersonate police and to conduct traffic stops.

Both brothers were arrested and received probation in July 2007 after their home was searched and investigators found the vehicle and a U.S. government-issued handgun.

The investigation into the case of their police impersonations in Arlington County, VA, led to another search of their home in August 2007, the day that at at the and implicated his brother, the documents said.

Later that day Wasel’s family reported him missing.

Wasel’s body was found five days later on a secluded dirt path in the woods behind the 12000 block of Green Meadow Drive in Columbia.

Wael Ali’s trial date is March 19.
