Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For SW Baltimore Metro Area

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued due to a storm with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail, the National Weather Service says.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel counties as well as Baltimore City Monday. Wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail are possible, according to authorities.

The severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 5:15 p.m. on Monday, June 17.

Weather officials issued the warning after radar detected a severe thunderstorm over Columbia at 4:32 p.m. that was moving east at 20 mph. It was accompanied by 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.

These locations may be impacted, officials say: Baltimore, Columbia, Severn, Elkridge, Baltimore-Washington Airport, Glen Burnie, Ellicott City, Catonsville, Severna Park, Odenton, Arbutus, Ferndale, Brooklyn Park, Fort Meade, Savage-Guilford, South Gate, Pumphrey, Scaggsville, Ilchester and Linthicum.

During the severe thunderstorm warning period, people should go inside to stay safe and move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

Do not drive underneath wooded areas until the threat has passed, as trees and branches may fall. Roads may become blocked by downed trees, and localized power outages are possible, according to the warning.

The area is also under a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m.
