Storms Spark Devastating House Fire Causing $1M Damage

It is believed that lightning from Wednesday's storms caused a home in Howard County to catch on fire, causing $1M in damage.

FULTON, MD — A home in Fulton was struck by lightning Wednesday evening when damaging storms rolled through the area. The lightning sparked a house fire shortly before 6 p.m. that caused more than $1 million in damage to the home located in the 11000 block of Holstein Street. It took firefighters approximately an hour to gain control over the fire, then they were able to work on completely extinguishing it.

Firefighters and paramedics from the Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue Services were dispatched to the home, as were firefighters from Fire Station 11 (Scaggsville). First arriving firefighters found "heavy fire through the roof" of the single-family home, noted P. Marc Fisher, spokesperson and firefighter/paramedic with the HCDF&R.

The home is considered uninhabitable and the American Red Cross is assisting the residents who have since been displaced. No injuries werereported.
