Tornado Touched Down in Howard County: National Weather Service

A tornado traveled more than 12 miles in HoCo on Tuesday afternoon, weather officials reported.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado passed through Howard County Tuesday afternoon.

The tornado touched down at 1:29 p.m. in the Lisbon area and lifted off at 1:48 p.m. near Ellicott City, according to preliminary data from the weather service.

Authorities say the tornado traveled 12.75 miles and was 500 yards wide at its maximum, leaving damaged property and blocked roads in its wake. It touched down on Old Annapolis Road at St. Michaels Road and continued on to Manor Lane at Carroll Mill Road, according to the National Weather Service.

As it journeyed through western Howard County, the tornado uprooted and snapped trees, which blocked roads in some cases and fell onto houses and garages in others; it also resulted in downed power lines.

More than 22,000 people were without power in Howard County Tuesday afternoon; and by 11:40 p.m., BGE was reporting that the number of outages was down to 7,462.
