Erik John Olfson, 51

Erik John Olfson, 51, Regional Vice President of Thyssen Krupp Elevator, avid sailor, former Severn football and lacrosse standout, loving father and husband, died unexpectedly in his home in Galesville Wednesday night.

Erik was born on January 15th , 1963 in Annapolis Maryland. He was a member of Severn School’s class of 1981 and graduated from Hampden Sydney University in 1986 with a degree in Economics. He married Susie Simons in December of 1992. Their daughter Maddie followed in 1997.

Erik laughed easily and his humor and tenacity was only matched by his love for his daughter Maddie. A skilled athlete and consummate sports enthusiast, Erik is still revered for his efforts as co-Captain of The Severn School’s undefeated football team during the 1980 season. Erik went on to play both football and lacrosse at Hampden Sydney and was member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

In over thirty years of service, Erik was an accomplished salesman and leader at ThyssenKrupp and cherished the friendships and camaraderie he enjoyed throughout the elevator industry.

Erik John is survived by his wife Susie; daughter, Maddie; his parents, Donna and James “Swede” Olfson of Harwood; his sister, Kristina and her husband Dr. James Wayman of Pebble Beach, California, his sister Kari and her husband Rear Admiral Dee Mewbourne of Lake Stevens, Washington; his, cousins, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews; his in-laws the Simons Family, and many good friends, co-workers and extended family. Erik is pre-deceased by his black lab Jack O’ Lantern Olfson.

A memorial service and celebration will be held on Tuesday, October 7th at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, 4 Wallace Manor Rd. Edgewater, MD 21037. The formal service will be held from 11:00am to 12:00pm. Friends and relatives will be received by the family prior to the service and immediately following. Flowers may be sent to the church or in lieu of flowers please send donations to Severn School, 116 Maple Ave. Severna Park, Md 21146, with a note “In memory of Erik Olfson ‘81.”
