'Save The Post Office' Rally Planned In Crofton Saturday

CROFTON, MD — A rally to save the local post office in Crofton has been planned for Saturday at 11 a.m. Organizers behind the "Save the Post Office From Trump" movement are demanding that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy resign after he ordered sorting machines and collection boxes removed in some cities, and halted overtime, resulting in delivery delays.

DeJoy issued a statement earlier this week saying that all changes being made to the U.S. Postal Service would be suspended until after the Nov. 3 election. Twenty Democratic attorneys general had announced plans to file federal lawsuits against the U.S. Postal Service, including Brian Frosh of Maryland.

“Widespread delays and disruptions in USPS delivery service have been reported across Maryland in recent weeks,” said Maryland's lawsuit.

The suit seeks a reversal of the “sudden and unilateral changes to the nature of postal services with no opportunity for public input.”

Some of the deferred decisions mean that retail hours at post offices will not change, blue collection boxes will not be removed and no mail processing facilities will be closed. The initiative also comes in the wake of President Donald Trump admitting in an interview with Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo that blocking a funding boost for the post office would increase the chances of "chaos surrounding the election in November."

Organized by MoveOn.org along with the NAACP, the Working Families Party and other groups, the national protests have been dubbed #SaveThePostOffice Saturday. All rallies will be held outside and participants are encouraged to wear face masks at the rally per state mandates and engage in social distancing. People can stay in their cars and decorate their vehicles with messages of support for the postal service.

The Crofton post office is located at 1296 Cronson Blvd.
