BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Meet Patch's Adorable Adoptable Pet of the Week available from Baltimore County Animal Services. Lovable 5-year-old Sampson #0256 was brought to the shelter back in January and before long, he quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. Don’t let his mellow, laid back disposition fool you into thinking he is aloof though.

Sampson adores attention and especially loves having his neck and ears scratched. Being that he was brought in as a stray, shelter staff can’t imagine how no one has fallen in love with him before now. Aside from Sampson’s good looks and winning personality, what makes him so special that everyone was so eager to tell his story? Well, upon arrival to BCAS, our vet team discovered that Sampson was FIV+.

Some potential adopters may be concerned about such a diagnosis without having a full understanding of what FIV truly is. FIV, or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, is a lifelong condition that is specific to cats and is transmitted from one cat to another through penetrating bite wounds.

While it is not impossible for an FIV+ cat to live with a cat who does not have FIV, it is recommended to only do so if both cats are able to peacefully coexist without getting into any tussles with one another. FIV+ cats are able to go on to live extended, healthy, happy lives, as long as their health is closely monitored with frequent vet visits suggested to keep a close eye on their condition. For this reason, shelter staff are hoping that the right adopter will step up and welcome this personable feline into their home.
