Carroll County Suspends Field Trips to D.C.

Students in Carroll County Public Schools will not be visiting the nation's capital on school-sponsored trips until further notice.

After terrorists threatened to attack Washington, D.C., administrators with Carroll County Public Schools reportedly decided to cancel trips to the nation’s capital until further notice.

Carroll County school leaders were “erring on the side of caution,” Supervisor of Security and Emergency Management Duane Williams told the Carroll County Times.

Approximately 15 students from North Carroll High School were planning a field trip to visit a museum in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Nov. 20, according to ABC 2 News, which reports it has been indefinitely postponed.

The decision came after the Islamic State (ISIS) released a video Monday stating it would carry out attacks in the U.S. capital similar to those that killed more than 125 people in Paris Friday, Nov. 13.

Carroll is not alone in its decision to postpone trips to the nation’s capital. School systems in Connecticut and South Carolina have also canceled their visits to D.C., The Washington Post reports.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said her force was responding to the ISIS video with a “surge in security,” according to the Post.

After Friday’s attacks in Paris, Baltimore Police deployed additional resources across the city “out of an abundance of caution,” according to Baltimore Police spokesman T.J. Smith.
