Experts Investigate Leak from Sykesville Manhole

The Bureau of Utilities repaired the leak within four hours of being notified.

At approximately 9 a.m. Tuesday morning the Town of Sykesville and CSX Railroad officials notified Carroll County Bureau of Utilities that effluent was leaking from a manhole cover located between the railroad tracks and the Patapsco River in Sykesville.

Utilities personnel located the spill, determined that there was a blockage in the piping and cleared the blockage within four hours of being notified of the problem.

Records indicate that the leak most likely started about 12 days ago and it is estimated approximately 77,500 gallons of effluent leaked from the system each day.

Utilities personnel have notified both the Carroll County Health Department and the Maryland Department of the Environment, who will determine what, if any, affect this leak had on the Patapsco River and what actions should be taken.
