McDaniel College Selects Mona Kerby to Endowed Appointment
Mona Kerby has been named the L. Stanley Bowlsbey Chair in Education and Graduate and Professional Studies.

McDaniel College has appointed Mona Kerby to the L. Stanley Bowlsbey Chair in Education and Graduate and Professional Studies. She will hold this new appointment through Spring 2020.
Kerby is a professor and coordinator of the school librarianship master’s degree, the writing for children and young adults graduate certificate and learning technologies specialist graduate certificate programs at McDaniel.
A former kindergarten teacher and school librarian, Kerby is the author of more than 10 children’s books, including “Owney, the Mail-Pouch Pooch,” which earned the California Young Readers Award and the Vermont Red Clover Award. She is active with the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and has served on the selection committee of the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY).

In 2012, she earned a prestigious Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program three-year grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to fund 12 full scholarships for teachers working in underserved regions in Maryland to earn master’s degrees in school librarianship from McDaniel.
As a tribute to her husband, JoAnn Harris-Bowlsbey established the L. Stanley Bowlsbey Chair in Education and Graduate and Professional Studies in 2010. The Chair recognizes a tenured member of the undergraduate education department or graduate and professional studies program whose dedication to students and colleagues embodies excellence in leadership, teaching and service.

Stan Bowlsbey majored in both English and French at McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) College graduating in 1952 and later returned to the college earning his master’s degree in education in 1959. He served as both a professor of education and the first dean of graduate studies at the college.
