60 MPH Wind, Large Hail: Severe Thunderstorm Warning

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the region.

Parts of Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18. Officials with the National Weather Service issued the warning after 3 p.m.

Strong wind and hail prompted the warning, after a severe thunderstorm was spotted by radar over Elkridge after 3 p.m., officials said. The radar reportedly showed 60 mph wind gusts and hail the size of half dollars.

The storm was moving southwest at 10 mph, according to the warning.

These areas may be impacted, according to the severe thunderstorm warning: Columbia, Severn, Elkridge, Baltimore-Washington Airport, Glen Burnie, Ellicott City, Catonsville, Odenton, Arbutus, Ferndale, Brooklyn Park, Fort Meade, Savage-Guilford, Pumphrey, South Gate, Scaggsville, Ilchester, Linthicum, Lansdowne and Jessup.

During the severe thunderstorm warning period, people in these areas should go to the lowest floor of a building, in an interior room. Remain inside to stay safe from wind and lightning. Do not drive underneath wooded areas until the threat has passed, as trees and branches may fall. Roads may become blocked by downed trees, and objects that have not been secured may go flying.
