Centarian recognized as "Patriotic Legend" for trail blazing military service in World War II

Centarian Vivian “Millie” Bailey of Columbia has been recognized by Coppin State University as a “Patriotic Legend.”
Bailey, who lives at Residences of Vantage Point in Downtown Columbia, was recently honored with a Certificate of Appreciation from Coppin President Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins “for breaking barriers and blazing trails for the legacy of African Americans in the military.” She also received an award from the Coppin State University African American History Month Committee as an “African American Military Legend.”
Bailey served in World War II and is a long-time local leader. She was recognized for a lifetime of community service in 2020 at the opening of Vivian C. ‘Millie’ Bailey Park at Lake Kittamaqundi in Downtown Columbia. The park, developed by The Howard Hughes Corporation, is the future site of the Howard County Veterans Monument.

In addition to her numerous honors, Bailey is widely known for her adventurous spirit. The 103-year-old Columbia resident’s “bucket list” included skydiving, so she did exactly that last year with family members, representatives of Howard County government, the Howard County Commission for Veterans and Military Families and the Vantage Point retirement community in attendance.
Residences at Vantage Point is Howard County’s only not-for-profit retirement living community offering a combination of enriching opportunities, flexible living options, and the security and value of a Life Care-style contract. For more information, visit www.VantagePointResidences.org.
