Dr. Silke Niederhaus Joins Board of NKF Serving MD and DE
Kidney transplant surgeon shares mission connection with healthcare nonprofit
LUTHERVILLE, Md. −The National Kidney Foundation Serving Maryland and Delaware has elected Silke Niederhaus, M.D. to a two-year term on its board of directors.
Now a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Dr. Niederhaus had kidney disease as a child and underwent a transplant at age 11. That experience inspired her to become a kidney (and pancreas) transplant and dialysis access surgeon.
After graduating from the University of Alabama and University of Alabama School of Medicine, she completed a general surgery residency and transplant fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, where received the ASTS Roche Laboratories Scientist Award and Best Third-Year Resident on Transplant Award. Later, she received the ATC Young Investigator Award, IPITA Travel Grant and ASTS Top Poster of Distinction Award.

Committed to helping NKF, Dr. Niederhaus has participated in Foundation events since 2001 and has even “rappelled for kidney health.” She resides in Elkridge with her husband, John, and their son, Noah.
