2 Weather Warnings Issued For Howard County

BREAKING: The National Weather Service issued two warnings for Howard County after 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning and severe thunderstorm warning for Howard County. The severe thunderstorm warning lasts until 6 p.m. and the flood warning expires at 11 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm was detected by radar over Laurel and was moving northeast before 5:30 p.m., the National Weather Service warned. Weather officials issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Howard, Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties because of the storm.

Wind gusts of 60 mph could cause trees and branches to fall, officials said, based on radar.

During the severe thunderstorm warning period, people should go inside to stay safe from wind and lightning.

Roads may become blocked by downed trees, and localized power outages are possible, according to the warning. Do not drive underneath wooded areas until the threat has passed.

A flood warning is in effect from 5:07 until 11 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13.

During a flood warning, flooding is imminent or occurring.

Thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain were detected by radar after 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Drivers should turn around if they come across flooded roads, and pedestrians should not attempt to walk through flood waters.

Locations that may experience flooding include the following: Columbia, Westminster, Ellicott City, Eldersburg, Mount Airy, Sykesville, Oakland, Gamber, New Windsor, Highland, Union Bridge, Clarksville, Finksburg, Carrollton, Henryton, West Friendship, Winfield, Louisville, Dayton and Gaither.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for most of the state until 10 p.m. because there is the potential for "intense rainfall rates" that may lead to flash flooding, weather officials said.
