HoCo Executive Ball Announces Plans To Run For Reelection
Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced Tuesday that he will be seeking a second term. He took office in 2018.
HOWARD COUNTY, MD — On Tuesday, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced he would run for reelection in 2022. The Maryland Democrat shared the news on his personal Facebook page.
“In these challenging times, I’ve been inspired by how the people of Howard County have pulled together and helped one another. We are definitely moving in the right direction, but there is still more to do to keep Howard County on the road to recovery,” Ball said in his video announcement.
Ball became the Howard County executive in 2018 after beating the incumbent Republican Allan Kittleman. He's the first African American to serve as Howard County's executive. Previously he served as a councilman for more than a decade.

Howard County is considered a swing county. Since 1990, voters have elected three Democrats and two Republicans for executive. Ball is the first candidate to publicly announce his intentions to run for the office.
"Howard County is a model across the nation due to our significant progress with our COVID-19 response and innovative efforts to advance Howard County’s education, economy and environment. We made incredible progress over the last several years, but the work is not yet done. I remain committed to ensuring Howard County is a place where every resident has the access and ability to live, work, play and grow for generations to come," he posted.
