What's Open, Closed For Juneteenth National Freedom Day In HoCo

Patch has a list of what's open and closed in Howard County on June 18 in recognition of Juneteenth National Freedom Day.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — County Government offices, 50+ centers and the animal shelter will be closed in observance of the Juneteenth National Freedom Day holiday on Friday, June 18. However, regular Friday curbside trash, recycling, food scrap and yard trim collection services will be in effect and the Alpha Ridge Landfill will be open.

“Juneteenth is a historic day for our country, as the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States,” Howard County Executive Calvin Ball said. “We’re proud to celebrate Juneteenth for the first time as an official county holiday. In Howard County, we know that diversity is our strength and we are always working to be more equitable and inclusive. That includes making sure that our community has the opportunity to recognize and learn more about this defining day.”

While county parks, the Baltimore & Ohio Ellicott City Station Museum, Gary J. Arthur, North Laurel and Roger Carter Community Centers, Meadowbrook Athletic Complex and Robinson Nature Center will be open June 18, Belmont Manor and Historic Park, county historic sites, the Ellicott City Colored School, Restored, Firehouse Museum, Kiwanis-Wallas Hall and the Patapsco Female Institute will be closed.

The Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) will operate on a regular weekday schedule. For more information on RTA, call 1-800-270-9553 or visit www.transitrta.com. All parking regulations and fees will be in effect.

The 9-1-1 Center, police and fire departments remain staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For emergencies, call 9-1-1; for non-emergencies, call 410-313-2200.

County operations will resume Monday, June 21, with regular business hours. Please keep in mind, while most County Government buildings remain closed to the public at this time, recreation and parks facilities and historic sites have reopened.
