Work on Route 40 Improvements to Begin This Week

Construction is expected to take about three weeks.

Work is set to begin this week on two streetscape improvement projects on Route 40 in Ellicott City, Howard County officials announced in a release.

β€œRoute 40 is a vital corridor for Howard County because of the economic activity it generates and the diverse communities it supports,” said County Executive Ken Ulman in a release.Β  β€œThese projects will benefit residents and visitors to the county while strengthening the vibrancy of the commercial centers and aiding water quality.”

Officials said work is expected to begin May 1 at two locations: U.S. 40 at Wheaton Way and U.S. 40 at Chatham Road and construction, expected to take about three weeks, will be done at night so as not to disrupt traffic.

Work will include new curbs for medians, with portions made of β€œbrick-style stamped concrete,” officials said. Also, there will be flower plantings and elements designed to provide better stormwater management, reducing runoff and improving water quality.

Councilmember Courtney Watson, whose district includes portions of Route 40 in Ellicott City, said in a release that county officials are β€œlooking forward to doing more of these types of projects in the coming years.”
