Air National Guardsman Honored for Heroism

Capt. Barry Crawford, a Maryland Air National Guard member based in Middle River, received the Air Force Cross for saving lives in Afghanistan.

Capt. Barry Crawford served as an active duty Air Force special tactics officer near Laghman Province, Afghanistan on May 4, 2010 when he fought in a 14-hour battle the involved 100 enemy fighters, according to a news release from the Maryland National Guard.

According to the release, Crawford “took decisive action to save the lives of three wounded Afghan soldiers and evacuate two Afghan soldiers killed in action.”

Crawford received his Air Force Cross—the second highest military award for a member of the Air Force during a ceremony Thursday at the Pentagon.
