Gas Prices Continue to Fall Ahead of Memorial Day

Though gas prices remain high, motorists continue to get some relief at the pump as Memorial Day weekend approaches.

Prices in Maryland have dropped for four straight weeks after peaking at $4 a gallon in April. The average for a gallon of regular unleaded in Maryland on Sunday was $3.68, according to the latest AAA survey. This average represents an eight-cent drop from a week ago and a 25-cent decrease from a year ago, AAA reports.

Nationally, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded on Sunday was $3.73. This represents a five-cent drop from a week ago and a 25-cent decline from a year ago, according to the AAA survey.

AAA reports that falling global crude oil prices are among the reasons for the recent price decrease at the pump and calls new Energy Information Administration projections for summer gas prices "good news for the US economy."

The EIA projects that the cost of US crude oil will fall to $104/barrel on average for 2012, $2 less than last month's projections.
