Gas Price Slide Continues as Memorial Day Nears

The average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel is 20 cents cheaper than at the same time in 2011, AAA reports.

 

Gas prices continue to decline heading into the Memorial Day weekend.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.69 a gallon Sunday, according to the latest AAA survey. This price represents a 4-cent decline from a week ago and a 20-cent drop from the same period in 2011, AAA reports.

In Maryland, the average price for regular unleaded slipped to $3.63 on Sunday, which is a 5-cent drop from a week ago and a 30-cent decline from the same time last year, according to AAA.

A strengthening U.S. dollar along with the continued financial concern over Greece and Spain continues to push oil prices down as the cost for a barrel of crude oil slipped to $91.48 Friday, which represents a 13 percent drop over three weeks, AAA reports.

According to a AAA news release, analysts report that prices may have peaked for the season as 34.8 million Americans are projected to travel this coming holiday weekend.
