Kenwood's Foster Qualifies for Junior Olympics

The rising senior placed second in the pole vault at the recent USATF Potamac Valley Association Region 16 Junior Olympic Championships.

rising senior Shannon Foster qualified for the next month's Junior Olympics in Baltimore after an impressive showing in the USATF Potamac Valley Association Region 16 Junior Olympic Championships.

tied for second in the pole vault in the young women's division after she cleared 7 feet, 10 1/2 inches at the event, held June 14-17 at the Prince George's County Sports and Learning Complex. Felicia Majors won the event after she cleared 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

Foster also placed 14th out of 35 competitors in the long jump with a leap of 16 feetm 3 inches. Kenwood track coach Mark Planamente said had it been during a school meet, the jump would have qualified for a school record.

In addition, Foster also competed in the triple jump, where she cleared 31-8. Next up for Foster, is the 46th USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships which will be held July 23-29 at Morgan State.

Planamente said this summer could be the beginning of something big for Foster, who he said is being recruited by the University of Michigan, Ohio State, Waynesburg University, and University of Oregon.
