Stay Healthy Labor Day Weekend

Do not forget sun protection and safety tips

Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. It is one more chance for your family to celebrate the season before another school year gets into full swing. Whether you head to the beach or enjoy a backyard cookout, remember to protect yourself from the sun.
The summer swelter has not disappeared and the sun’s rays are still strong in September. That means sunburn and skin damage are just as big a risk as ever. Excessive heat exposure can also lead to heat cramps and heat exhaustion. Enjoy some Labor Day fun, but do so safely.
Patient First offers these safety tips:

  • Always use sunscreen, even when it is cloudy. Reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours.
  • Wide brimmed hats help protect your ears and neck from the sun.
  • Drink water throughout the day in order to stay hydrated.
  • Wear appropriate light-weight clothing.
  • Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet (UV) rays
  • Take advantage of shade whenever possible. Remember the sun’s UV rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity in the heat. Take frequent breaks in a cool place.

Labor Day cookouts are also fun but they can be dangerous. Thousands of people are treated for grill related injuries every year. Remember these safety precautions:

  • Keep children and pets away. Establish a 3-foot “Kid Free Zone” around your grill.
  • Use your grill outdoors only. Keep it away from your home, deck furniture and overhanging branches that might catch fire.
  • Remove grease or fat from the grill tray so it does not flame up.
  • Never leave the grill unattended.
  • Grilling and drinking alcohol do not mix.
