Testing Underway at Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore

Maryland Lottery officials help ensure casino is ready for business.

The Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore opens Aug. 26, and before then it must pass a series of tests to ensure everything from the games to staff are in solid working order.

By law, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Control Commission is required to conduct the tests. This week, the commission will test the 2,500 slot machines and more than 100 table games as well as employee training, surveillance, security, technical systems and internal controls at the new $442 million entertainment venue off Russell Street, the Horseshoe Casino reported.

The first controlled demonstration took place Monday, and a second is scheduled for Wednesday, casino officials said.

Since it is not open yet, the casino does not make money from the events. It is donating funds raised to the Maryland Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Living Classrooms Foundation.

“As we prepare to introduce Baltimore’s next great attraction, we’re thrilled to put our new team members and systems to the test and support two great organizations,” Horseshoe Baltimore Senior Vice President and General Manager Chad Barnhill said.

Cystic Fibrosis Maryland Chapter Executive Director Josie Schaeffer said the funds will help develop new drugs to fight the genetic disease and improve the quality of life for sufferers.

The chapter will share the money from the demonstration equally with Living Classrooms, a Baltimore-based nonprofit that uses maritime, urban and natural resources to provide job skills and enrichment opportunities for youths.

“We’re grateful to the team at Horseshoe Baltimore for hosting two such special events that will support disadvantaged individuals as they overcome obstacles and achieve success in their lives,” Living Classrooms President and CEO James Piper Bond said.

The Horseshoe Casino will open at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26. It is located at 1525 Russell Street.
