Cougars Girls Lacrosse Falls to Mavericks in State Championship
The Mavericks played with an emotional edge in a close matchup.
The same day Fallston High School's boys lacrosse beat North Carroll in the state championships, Cougars girls lacrosse played for the 2A/1A state title against another Carroll County team—the Manchester Valley Mavericks.
But while the boys walked away with their third consecutive state championship, the Cougars girls fell to the Mavericks, 13-10, the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association reported.
"They had a couple players make big plays, especially in the first half," Fallston coach Mike McTeague told The Baltimore Sun, calling the Mavericks an "excellent team."
For the Mavericks, it was an emotional game, played to honor the memory of assistant coach Devin Spence and Gene Kirchner, according to TopLaxRecruits.com.
Spence died in 2013 in an auto accident, and Kirchner, the brother of head coach Shelly Brezicki, was the Reisterstown firefighter who died last year in the line of duty.
As a result of the two tragedies, last season was "really emotional" and difficult to play through, Mavericks' Haile Houck told The Baltimore Sun. "...this year, we wanted to come out and do our best and do it for Spence and Gene—and that's what we did."
In addition to being a strong team, the head coach said the girls definitely had support from the outside.
"We had a heck of a lot of players who were dedicated, lots of coaches and supporters, and definitely two angels watching over us," Brezicki told TopLaxRecruits.com.
