Fire Chief Derrick Lloyd of Joppa Dies at 45

Lloyd was the former chief of Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company.

Derrick Lloyd of Joppa passed away Monday, Dec. 22. He was 45.

Lloyd was a past chief of the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, serving in that role from 2008 to 2011.

A member of the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company for 26 years, Lloyd earned accolades for his service and molded many firefighters across the region.

In 2014, Lloyd was named to the Harford-Cecil Volunteer Fireman’s Association Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Firefighter of the Year in 2008; and he was elected the Joppa-Magnolia Firefighter of the Year in 2005, according to the fire company.

Lloyd also trained firefighters across the region as an instructor for the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle; his sons, Christopher and Nicholas; and the entire Joppa-Magnolia family, according to a statement from the fire company.

Visitation will be from 1–4 p.m. and 7–9 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, at McComas Funeral Home, 1317 Cokesbury Road, in Abingdon.

A full fire department funeral is being planned, with details pending.

Memorial contributions may go to the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company at 1403 Old Mountain Road South, Joppa, MD 21085; or to the National Brain Tumor Society at 55 Chapel Street, Suite 200, Newtown, MA 02458.
