State Basketball Championship Goes Into Overtime: Cougars Versus Gators

The Quince Orchard Cougars played the Perry Hall Gators Saturday in the class 4A boys basketball championship.

COLLEGE PARK, MD — The Quince Orchard Cougars fell just shy of winning the team's first state basketball title Saturday, defeated in overtime by the Perry Hall Gators.

The class 4A boys basketball championship packed the Xfinity Center, with fans hungry for the crown that neither team had ever won in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA).

The 8 p.m. game went into overtime as the Gators tied the Cougars, 48-48, at the end of the fourth quarter.

It was the second close game for the Cougars this week.

To get to the state finals, Quince Orchard beat the previously undefeated Wise Pumas, 55-52, in a matchup that The Washington Post reported was a nail-biter of a playoff.
