David Trone, Total Wine & More Co-Founder, Wins U.S. House Seat

Democrat David Trone, a wine magnate and Potomac resident, defeated Republican​ Amie Hoeber​ in bid for U.S. House seat.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Democrat David Trone easily won his race to succeed Rep. John Delaney in the U.S. House of Representatives Tuesday night, according to unofficial vote returns from the Maryland Board of Elections. The wine magnate and Potomac resident defeated Republican Amie Hoeber, earning 72.5 percent of the vote.

Hoeber, a former Reagan administration official, got a total of 30,477 votes, according to elections board. The national security analyst was endorsed by Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, who won a second term.

Trone celebrated his victory with supporters Tuesday night at a Gaithersburg Marriott. Trone told the crowd at his election night party that “we need more compassion, competence, and civility in Washington, and I pledge to lead the way.”

On Twitter, he emphasized his appreciation for his voters: “From the bottom of my heart I want to thank the voters of the 6th District for allowing me the privilege of being your next representative in Congress. Tomorrow we begin the hard work of restoring civility, competence, and compassion to Washington.”

Trone will join other Maryland Democrats in the House, including Reps. John Sarbanes, Jamie Raskin, Dutch Ruppersberger, Elijah Cummings, Anthony Brown, and Steny Hoyer. Reps. Raskin, of Takoma Park, and Sarbanes, of Towson, were the two lawmakers up for reelection this year.

Trone is the co-founder of the Total Wine & More, a national retailer with 193 stores in 24 states. The millionaire businessman announced his candidacy in August of 2017.
