Gaithersburg Weather Report: Winter Chills To Swoop In Soon
The weather is spring-like now, but February is shaping up to be a cold one in our area.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Temperatures are soaring into the 60s in Montgomery County, so snow is probably the farthest thing from your mind right now. But it is still winter, and a new cold snap with possibilities for snow is on the way.
A "wintry pattern" is expected to develop around Feb. 5 that could -- potentially -- bring snow to our area, according to a report from the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang.
"It's then that weather models forecast the jet stream to bulge north over Alaska and crash south over the eastern U.S.," the report states. "This creates a warm-West cold-East setup, resembling the frigid pattern that developed in late December and early January."

This cold weather pattern could last for two or three weeks, although we'll need to get a little closer to that time frame to know for sure.
Of course, just because it's getting colder doesn't mean we'll get snow. However, while it's certainly possible we could once again stay dry during the cold snap, we are entering what is historically the snowiest time of year for the region. One concern is that the phenomenon known is La Nina is in effect, which may be contributing to the lack of precipitation so far this winter.

Until that cold weather swoops in, however, there is basically no chance for snow with temperatures soaring above normal. In fact, we're likely to stay in the 50s for most of the next two weeks.
