Hypothermia Alert For Jan. 20-21 In Montgomery County

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Freezing temperatures have prompted officials to issue a Hypothermia Alert for Montgomery County. The alert will last through 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21.

Montgomery County has activated the Extreme Cold Plan for a Hypothermia Alert from 7pm Wed, 1/20 to 10am Thurs, 1/21. Expect the wind chill to be below 32 deg. Wear layers if you go outside. The county issues a Hypothermia Alert when temperatures drop below 32 degrees, making it more likely for people to get hypothermia and frostbite. Officials said they are particularly concerned for children, seniors, homeless individuals, and animals.

To keep the public safe, Montgomery County has published a list of tips on its website. Take a look at the list below:

• Neighbors, friends or family members should check on the elderly, especially a senior living alone. Older people are particularly susceptible to hypothermia, even inside their homes and may need assistance.
• Children engaged in outdoor activities should be carefully monitored by a responsible adult.
• Everyone spending time outside should dress appropriately to protect against the cold.
• Montgomery County provides a variety of sheltering opportunities for the homeless. Call the police non-emergency line, 301-279-8000 if an individual appears to be in danger.
• Animals should not be left outside unattended. Leaving animals outside unattended in these conditions may be considered an act of cruelty and pet owners could be charged and fined accordingly. Executive Regulation 10-10AM, unattended tethering of dogs goes into effect during periods of extreme cold. Call the police non-emergency number, 301-279-8000, to report an animal that appears to be in danger.
