More Than A Walk In The Woods
Montgomery County teens take part in a county wide environmental competition.
The Montgomery Soil Conservation District hosted the annual Montgomery County Envirothon competition at the Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood, MD on Thursday, April 28, 2016.
A total of 70 students from four Montgomery County High Schools took part in the competition. Working in teams of five, students were tested in five natural resource areas including soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and an environmental issue that changes from year to year. This year’s additional issue was Invasive Species. Each team’s knowledge, teamwork and problem-solving skills are tested and evaluated under the supervision of foresters, soil scientists and wildlife specialists.
The winning team for this year’s Montgomery County Envirothon was the Militant Platypodes from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland. The five person team contains two former champions from the 2014 winning county team and they achieved the highest overall score since 2011.
