New Composting Drop-Off Program Aims To Reduce Food Waste
The City of Gaithersburg's says its new compost drop-off site will reduce food waste in the area.

The City of Gaithersburg Department of Public Works now offers residents a convenient and sustainable way to reduce food waste with its new compost drop-off site. Located at 800 Rabbitt Road, next to the Oil and Antifreeze Recycling Area, the site is accessible 24/7 and the service is free of charge.
Acceptable items for composting include:

- Fruit and vegetable scraps
- Citrus peels
- Fruit and vegetable pits, seeds, etc.
- Coffee grounds, filters, and tea leaves/bags
- Eggshells
- Baking ingredients, herbs, and spices
- Pasta, bread, and cereal
- Paper towels, paper towel rolls, and paper plates
DO NOT compost:
- Meat, fish/seafood, dairy products
- Food packaging (plastic, stickers, rubber bands, etc.)
- Animal/pet feces, hair/pet fur
- Items labeled biodegradable or Oxo-Biodegradable
Only place acceptable food waste into the community compost bin. Compostable liners containing food items are okay to place in the bin.
