Rabid Raccoon Attacks Dog In Gaithersburg: City Officials
A raccoon that attacked a dog in Gaithersburg Thursday morning has tested positive for rabies, according to Gaithersburg officials.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — A raccoon that attacked a dog in Gaithersburg Thursday morning has tested positive for rabies, according to Gaithersburg officials.
On Thursday, Dec. 27, Gaithersburg Animal Control officers responded to the 100 block of Treehaven St. at 10 a.m., shortly after a raccoon reportedly attacked a dog.
The raccoon died from its injuries and was transported to a facility for rabies testing, officials said. Test results confirmed that the raccoon had rabies. The dog, however, was up to date on its vaccinations and received boosters.

Rabies can be deadly to humans and animals if they are exposed to the virus and do not receive treatment.
If you were in direct contact with a raccoon in this area in the past several weeks, call the Montgomery County Health Department immediately at 240-777-1755. If your pet had any contact with a raccoon in this area in the past several weeks, call Gaithersburg Animal Control at 301-258-6343.

The only way to protect your pet is through regular vaccinations. If your pet is not currently vaccinated, officials urge you to contact your veterinarian immediately to schedule an appointment.
