GAITHERSBURG, MD — When a 4-year-old retrieving toys from the bottom of a Gaithersburg community swimming pool didn't return to the surface on June 24, lifeguard Marisa Arnold sprang into action. Once out of the water, she noticed that the child's face was purple; and she quickly began performing CPR. After about 30 chest compressions, the child was saved.

Arnold — a recent graduate of Quince Orchard High School — is being hailed a hero after saving the drowning child at Stonebridge Community Pool. And on Tuesday, she was honored with a proclamation at a Montgomery County Council session.

Council Vice President Sidney Katz and council member Gabe Albornoz presented her the award.

"Marisa reacted quickly and professionally during an extremely stressful situation. A child's life was saved due to her lifeguarding skills," Katz said. "Other community pools are already discussing this and are using her as the perfect example."

Albornoz — the county's former recreation director — also commended the teen for her heroic efforts.

"I want to commend you, Marisa, for your heroism, for your quick thinking," Albornoz said. "So, thank you for your leadership."

Then turning to Arnold's parents, who were standing behind her, Albornoz said: "As a father of two young girls, congratulations to your parents as well. You've raised a remarkable daughter."

Arnold did not want to speak at the ceremony, but told Montgomery Community Media that she was honored to receive the proclamation.

The council published a video of the proclamation, which is embedded below:
