GAITHERSBURG, MD — If you’re among the millions of Americans traveling this 4th of July, you may be in for some sticker shock at the gas pump.

Gas prices are at a seven-year high heading into the holiday weekend, according to a recent AAA report. As of June 29, the average price for a gallon of gas in the United States was $3.11.

Last year, gas prices hovered around $2.18 per gallon just before the July 4 holiday.

How much can you expect to pay at the pump in Gaithersburg? AAA data shows the average price for a gallon of gas in Montgomery County was $3.17 on Tuesday. Average prices are updated daily.

If you live in the western United States, you’re likely paying some of the highest gas prices in the nation. As of June 22, gas prices were as much as $4.24 in California, $3.67 in Nevada and $3.64 in Washington state.

Meanwhile, Southern states including Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Missouri are enjoying the nation’s lowest gas prices, ranging from $2.72 to $2.87 per gallon.

Destinations vary this 4th of July, but AAA says the top five destinations this year are Orlando; Anaheim, California; Denver; Las Vegas and Seattle.
