Winning Class Reads 84K+ Pages in Mayor’s Book Club Competition
97 third grade students read more than 275K pages as they competed in the Mayor's Book Club Reading Contest.

From the City of Gaithersburg: Over a four-week period in March and April, 97 third grade students in five area elementary schools read more than 275,000 pages as they competed for top prize in the 8th Annual Mayor’s Book Club Reading Contest, held in conjunction with the Gaithersburg Book Festival.
Ms. Kara O’Brien’s class from Laytonsville Elementary School won top honors, with students reading a combined 84,972 pages. The top individual reader was William, a student in Ms. Laura Parker’s 3rd grade class at Strawberry Knoll Elementary School. As part of his recognition, William will be invited to ride on the trolley with the Mayor and City Council during the 79th Annual Gaithersburg Labor Day Parade in Olde Towne on September 4.
At a special ceremony at the Gaithersburg Book Festival, taking place on the grounds of City Hall on Saturday, May 20, Mayor Jud Ashman will recognize the winning class and winning student. The presentation will be held in the Children’s Village on Imagination Stage at 10 a.m. and will feature a dance performance by Al Amal Dabke Troupe.
Competition participants from Diamond, Gaithersburg, Strawberry Knoll and Washington Grove Elementary Schools will also be recognized. All participating students from the five schools that entered the competition are now members of the Mayor’s Book Club.
The Mayor will visit with the winning class before the end of the school year for a pizza party and the distribution of Book Club membership cards.
