DICKERSON, MD — Flames tore through a barn in Dickerson overnight, causing upward of $2 million in damage, fire officials said Tuesday morning.

Around 11:45 p.m. Monday, dozens of Montgomery County firefighters were called to 21511 Peach Tree Rd. — where they found a 500-by-100-foot barn completely engulfed in flames.

No animals were inside and no one was injured, Battalion Chief Jay Blake said early Tuesday, standing among the charred ruins. The barn mostly contained tools and equipment, as well as large bales of hay.

Blake said the barn was located in a "non-hydrant area" — which meant crews had to extinguish the fire by shuttling in tankers filled with 3,000 gallons of water. Through their efforts, firefighters were able to protect surrounding buildings and a nearby fuel site.

Pete Piringer, a spokesman for the county's Fire and Rescue Service, called the barn "a total loss."

Crews remained on the scene late Tuesday morning to eliminate any remaining fire hazards. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
