Inmate Violently Attacks Officer In Montgomery County Jail

An inmate at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Boys is accused of attempting to murder a correctional officer, police said.

BOYDS, MD — An inmate at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Boys is accused of attempting to murder a correctional officer Sunday, police announced.

Edgar Alfonso Borrera, 26, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and second-degree assault of a correctional officer.

Montgomery County Police said Borrera assaulted the correctional officer at about 4:58 a.m. Sunday on an upper tier of the facility in front of the cells.

"Borrera repeatedly punched and struck the victim about his face and upper body with a weapon fashioned from hard plastic and a milk carton," police said in a statement.

Another inmate rendered aid to the correctional officer after the assault and tried to contain Borrera by grabbing him, police said. Other correctional officers responded to assist the victim.

The officer was transported to a hospital with multiple injuries, including fractured bones in his face and lacerations to his forehead.

Detectives located the weapon used by Borrera during the assault and seized it as evidence, police said.
