Nothing Standard About Kindergarten Math at Barnesville

Kindergarten students have been learning about non-standard units of measurement and putting skills to use inside and outside the classroom.

Kindergarten students have been learning about non-standard units of measurement, using counting and estimating skills to measure items inside and outside the classroom.
Linking cubes are fun and colorful tools for counting and sorting, and since they are unified in size, they are also a useful measuring tool. Students measured their journals and backpacks inside, and then they worked together outside to measure the length of the school bus. For the record, the big yellow Barnesville School bus is 484 cubes long.
Students put their measuring skills to work in the garden beds, using gloves to map out planting rows and then using their fingers to estimate the distance needed to plant seeds about an inch apart. They are planting spinach and other vegetables that will grow on campus over the summer.

Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences is an independent private school in Montgomery County, Maryland offering innovative preschool through 8th grade programs. Cross-curricular teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding. Small classes enable skilled teachers to engage each child in an academically challenging environment. Our 30-acre campus is our extended classroom, and we integrate nature into everyday learning.
