Poolesville to Celebrate Arbor Day With Tree Plantings at Local Schools

Commissioners to Join Schools in Ceremonies at Poolesville High, John Poole MS, Poolesville Elementary.

Poolesville, Md. – The Town of Poolesville will celebrate Arbor Day, on Friday, April 29, by joining together with the three public schools in Poolesville to host tree-planting ceremonies at Poolesville High School, John Poole Middle School and Poolesville Elementary School.

Arbor Day is a national holiday that was first observed in 1872 when J. Sterling Morton proposed that a special day be set aside for planting trees. Each of the three Poolesville public schools will hold a short ceremony in which the Town’s official Arbor Day proclamation will be read by a Town commissioner and then students will plant a tree on their school’s property. The Arbor Day tree-plantings build further on the Town’s recent attainment of the prestigious Sustainable Maryland Certification, in recognition of its comprehensive efforts to adopt “green” initiatives and best practices for sustainability. The plantings are also integral to Poolesville’s quest to become a Tree City USA community.

“We’re proud of our students’ pledge to be advocates of the environment by planting trees on Arbor Day and we in Poolesville are strongly committed to ‘going green’,” said Jim Brown, President of the Poolesville Town Commission. “Trees not only help to improve the quality of the air that we all breathe, but they also beautify our community and create a lasting legacy for those who live, work, play and go to school here.”
