Beltway Plaza Mall is proud to announce the opening of Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken.
Ribbon Cutting Attracts Local Dignitaries and Fried Chicken Aficionados

Beltway Plaza Mall is proud to announce the opening of Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. An official ribbon cutting ceremony was recently held to commemorate the opening of the Restaurant, the first in the DC area.
Gus’s is not your typical fried chicken restaurant. The recipes are authentic family recipes that date back to the original owners created over 60 years ago in the small community of Mason, Tennessee by Napoleon “Na” Vanderbilt and his wife Maggie. Na and Maggie created something amazing – fried chicken that united the community. The new restaurant, part of the Tennessee-based chain, features a rustic decor both inside and out. But inside you’ll find the best fried chicken, side dishes (baked beans, Cole slaw, potato salad, greens, mac & cheese, fried okra, fried pickles) and homemade pies in the area.
Mark Dawejko, the mid-Atlantic developer for Gus’s in Greenbelt and the managing partner of Penn Capital Partners, was quoted as saying, “Our firm is proud to bring this iconic restaurant to the DC area. We want to thank the city of Greenbelt. We also want to thank Beltway Plaza Mall and the Quantum Companies for welcoming us to their very special community.”

During the ribbon-cutting, Mayor Emmett Jordan, Greenbelt Mayor was quoted, "I want to express our appreciation to Penn Capital Partner’s for selecting Greenbelt as the home of Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. Small businesses like Gus’s are an important driver of growth and employment for this community."
The addition of Gus’s to Beltway Plaza Mall is part of the aggressive approach ownership has undertaken to attract new retail concepts to its approximately 100 merchant mall. New merchants in addition to Gus’s include newly updated AMC Theaters, Furniture Hub and Fallas with more on the way.

Greenbelters and all Washingtonians, are going to be delighted to have this establishment as a new dining option.”

About Gus’s Fried Chicken - Over 60 years ago in the small community of Mason, Tennessee, Napoleon “Na” Vanderbilt created something amazing – fried chicken that could unite a community and sold it out of the back door of a local tavern. After Na’s wife Maggie and Na’s deaths, Vernon “Gus” Bonner, Na’s only son, inherited the priceless chicken recipe and the restaurant they worked so hard to build. In 1984, Gus and his wife, Gertrude, reopened under the now well-known name, “Gus’s World Famous Hot and Spicy Fried Chicken.” In the years since the business has grown to include 22 locations in 11 states with more restaurants planned.
