Greenbelt's 75th Anniversary Sign Approved with Modifications

Greenbelt City Council voted to approve the design of a 75th Anniversary sign with modifications at its most recent regular meeting on Feb. 13. City Manager Michael McLaughlin said the city would have eight to 10 signs, measuring 2 feet wide by 3 feet high.

Discussion about the mock up sign included ideas for making it more readable along with other suggestions.

• "It's too busy." (Mayor Judith "J" Davis)

• If the 75th Anniversary 1937-2012 language at the bottom of the mock up sign was taken out, the center part could be made bigger. (Mayor Davis)

• The 1937 - 2012 that's on top of the 75th Anniversary logo design would be difficult to read from a car — "I prefer to have that 75th Anniversary 1937 - 2012 at the bottom because it's more visible." (Councilmember Leta Mach)

• If council was going to do that [keep the 75th language at the bottom], the sign could just say welcome to Greenbelt, national historic landmark and 75th Anniversary. (Mayor Davis)

• "We're all going to stand here and redesign this when we're not designers." (Leta Mach) "If I were designing it, I might take that little tiny square logo and put it on the right hand corner...but it wouldn't be visible."

• "Personally I'd like to have a tree on there." (Councilmember Rodney Roberts)

• "This is a tree." (Councilmember Silke Pope)

• "If there's a way of making the logo bigger and then keep everything else... You don't need as much white space maybe." (Mayor Davis)

• The logo could be made bigger in terms of trying to fill in the white space on both sides. (Councilmember Edward Putens)

Mayor Davis asked staff to make the logo bigger, saying that after that it would probably be fine. Council voted 6-0 to approve the signs with modifications and authorize their installation.

Mayor Judith "J" Davis, Mayor Pro-Tem Emmett Jordan, and Councilmembers Leta Mach, Silke Pope, Edward Putens and Rodney Roberts attended the meeting.

Please note the signs have been approved. Any modifications would need to reflect council's comments.
