2 Havre de Grace Memorial Day Ceremonies Planned For 2021

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — The city of Havre de Grace will mark Memorial Day 2021 in traditional fashion, with two separate ceremonies.

Councilman Jason Robertson said he hoped to see people at Tydings Park for the event on Monday, May 31, speaking at the May 17 council meeting.

Beforehand, the Joseph L. Davis Post 47 American Legion will hold a service at Angel Hill Cemetery to remember the fallen. That will be at 9 a.m.

Memorial Day originated in the years following the Civil War and became a federal holiday in 1971, to be held the last Monday in May.

Until noon, the flag will fly at half-staff as a memorial for the nation’s military war dead; for the rest of the day, it is to fly full and high in a salute to living veterans.

Here is proper etiquette when the flag is hoisted:

• Spectators who aren't in military uniform should face the flag, stand at attention and place their hands over their hearts.
• Those who are in uniform should give a proper military salute.
• Those not in uniform wearing hats should remove them with the right hand and hold hats at the left shoulder with palms resting on their hearts.
• Attendees who are not U.S. citizens should stand at attention.
• When the flag advances in a moving column, all persons should salute it as it passes.

2 Memorial Day Ceremonies Planned In Havre de Grace

The Memorial Day ceremony with the American Legion will be at 9 a.m. Monday, May 31, at Angel Hill Cemetery, 750 Ohio St., Havre de Grace, MD 21078.

The city's Memorial Day ceremony will follow at 11 a.m. near the War Memorial at Tydings Park, 908 S. Washington St., Havre de Grace, MD 21078.

This year some new events will be happening:

• The Havre de Grace Arts Collective is hosting a Memorial Day weekend paint-along from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 29. Participants will draw red poppies at the Cultural Center at the Opera House, 121 N. Union Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.
• Memorial Day community yoga at the Lock House is at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 31. Beach Bee Yoga is hosting at 817 Conesteo Street.
