Carnival On The Chesapeake Canceled Because Of Weather

The carnival in Havre de Grace is canceled, thanks to Hurricane Florence; it may be rescheduled.

HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — The Carnival on the Chesapeake has been canceled. The Havre de Grace Independence Day Commission, which was organizing the family friendly event, announced the decision Tuesday, as Hurricane Florence was a little more than 700 miles off the coast of North Carolina.

Gov. Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency in Maryland on Monday, allowing the state to get resources ready in the event of storm damage.

Hurricane Florence is expected to approach the coast of North or South Carolina on Thursday or Friday, the National Hurricane Center said in a statement Tuesday evening.

"Well, Florence has other plans so we have decided to cancel the Carnival on the Chesapeake," the Havre de Grace Independence Day Commission reported on Tuesday.

Organizers said they were working with the carnival company to determine whether another date could work.

Last year, the first time the Independence Day Commission held the carnival separately from the July 4 festivities, it was in October.
