Conowingo Dam Opens Multiple Spill Gates

Minor flooding is possible near Port Deposit and at the Havre de Grace City Yacht Basin, officials say.

CECIL COUNTY, MD — Nine flood gates are open at the Conowingo Dam, officials said Wednesday morning. The dam was operating under spill conditions.

Between nine and 13 gates may be open before 4:30 p.m., according to Conowingo Dam officials.

The Susquehanna River was flowing at 246,000 cubic feet per second, officials reported at 8:30 a.m.

That was up from 207,000 cubic feet per second after midnight, when seven spill gates were open.

The number of open spill gates also increased Tuesday evening. One gate was opened Tuesday afternoon. Five gates were open after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), which said there was a slight chance of flooding in the area of MD 222 near Port Deposit.

A coastal flood advisory is in effect for Havre de Grace until 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Tides should be 1.5 feet above normal. Water is expected to go over the bulkhead at the Havre de Grace City Yacht Basin, with high tide at 12:22 p.m. Wednesday.

Minor flooding may also occur on low-lying areas along the shore, according to the National Weather Service.
