HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Harford County Executive Barry Glassman announced Thursday that he will run for Comptroller of Maryland. The Republican made the announcement of his candidacy at the Level Volunteer Fire Company, where he began his career in public service as a volunteer firefighter.

"I was lucky enough to be the first in my family to attend college. Growing up on the farm in Level, I never imagined that I'd one day lead my fellow Harford County citizens through two recessions, an opioid crisis and a pandemic," Glassman said in a statement. "I certainly never thought I'd be running for statewide office. Life takes interesting turns, but along the way I have always stayed true to myself and my long-held conservative beliefs."

Glassman, who was the president of the Maryland Association of Counties in 2019, has been the county executive in Harford County since 2014. He has 30 years of public service as an elected official. He was a Maryland senator from 2008 to 2014 and state delegate from 1999 to 2008. Before that, he was a member of the Harford County Council from 1990 to 1998.

"I have been thinking, talking and praying with family about my future as the end of my second term as Harford County Executive approaches next year," Glassman wrote in a statement from his campaign. "Today, I am proud to announce that I am running to serve as Maryland's next Comptroller. It is more clear than ever that Maryland needs an executive in this office who will protect taxpayers and small businesses."

Current Comptroller Peter Franchot, a Democrat, is running for governor.
