Fire Threat, Maryland Bridge Warnings In Effect Due To Wind

BREAKING: Gusty conditions have led to warnings on Friday, March 16, including about an enhanced fire threat.

Windy weather has prompted warnings and restrictions across Maryland. From the waters to grasslands, much of the state is experiencing conditions that pose hazards for certain activities.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement advising there is an enhanced threat of wildfires on Friday, March 16.

Through Friday evening, weather officials advise gusty winds combined with humidity and low fuel moisture will mean that fire could spread rapidly.

People should use caution handling any source of ignition, including matches, cigarettes and machinery. Authorities ask smokers to take care when discarding smoking materials, noting that if dry grasses and tree litter ignite, the fire could grow out of control.

The winds have also impacted the waters across Maryland. A gale warning has been issued for tidal waters until 6 p.m. on Friday, March 16, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition, several bridges have restrictions or warnings in effect.

  • The Bay Bridge is in limited wind restrictions. Winds of 40 to 49 mph trigger limited wind restrictions, which means these are prohibited: house trailers, empty box trailers or any other vehicle that law enforcement personnel say may not safely cross. Drivers denied passage will be given assistance so they can safely turn around.
  • The Hatem, Key, Nice and Tydings bridges are under wind warnings. Triggered by 30 to 39 mph winds, wind warnings mean drivers of the following vehicles should use extra caution while crossing the bridge: house trailers, box trailers, motorcycles, vehicles with roof-mount racks containing cargo or any other vehicle that may be subject to high winds.

Gusts at the Hatem Bridge were 36 mph as of 10:52 a.m., according to state weather station data.

During periods of high winds, drivers are advised to keep both hands on the wheel.
